The Story
Initially, Benjamin Earl Nelson became known as a member of The Drifters. Despite the great success, King made plans for a solo career. Even the million-selling worldwide hit „Save The Last Dance For Me“ could not prevent the separation. As Ben E. King he started as a solo artist. The ballad „Spanish Harlem“, written by the legend Phil Spector, became his first Top 10 hit in the USA. It was followed by the song that was to make Ben E. King immortal: „Stand By Me.“ The song has been at the top of the charts several times, including again 25 years after its first release, pushed by the Steven King movie of the same name. In addition, countless world stars have recorded versions of „Stand By Me.“ Despite this unique success, Ben E. King continued to place more hits and successful albums in the following years. He was the first musician to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, either as a member of The Drifters or as a solo act. Ben E. King had a long and extraordinarily successful career with five number one hits, 12 top 10 hits and 26 top 40 hits. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Drifters.
