The Story
Chet Baker was a pivotal figure in shaping the cool West Coast Jazz sound of the early to mid-1950s. The releases of Baker and Art Pepper’s collaborations were initially fragmented across various compilations, often with individual tracks and occasionally edited solos, making it challenging to view them as a unified collection.
Although recorded at Los Angeles’ Forum Theatre, the session was a studio recording without an audience. Together with another exceptional session, these recordings form their most renowned joint album, Playboys was also issued as Picture of Heath, featuring identical liner notes but an entirely different cover design. The latter was named after the opening track and served as a reminder that nearly all of the album's tunes were Jimmy Heath’s compositions (two were by Art Pepper).
