The Story

Nina Simone began playing the piano at the age of four. She had to finish her music studies without a degree, because as a black woman she was not admitted to the exams. A job as a piano teacher led her to singing, whereby she improvised her own pieces right from the start. She chose the stage name Simone as a homage to the actress Simone Signoret. A concert in New York City Town Hall in 1959 made her famous worldwide. Nina Simone used her popularity early on to bring about social upheaval in the USA. She was an integral part of the black civil rights movement of the 1960s. This is one of the reasons why she still enjoys cult status today, reaching new fans with her music again and again, who celebrate her distinctive voice, her soulful piano playing and her timeless songs. Whether it‘s Spotify playlists by Barack Obama or other celebrities, biopics in cinema and on Netflix or the Black Lives Matter movement; Nina Simone remains fascinating, her life touching, her work great.
